Two Stories, One Signal

Why Your 2027 Marketing Plan Needs to Change Now

Two (2) stories broke in the same week that, on their own, look unrelated. Read together, they tell you almost everything about where marketing is headed.

  1. OpenAI expanded ChatGPT ads to thirty-one (31) European markets, building on the ad product it introduced earlier this year. Chat interfaces are moving from experiment to a real advertising surface, with real inventory, and per OpenAI's own data, real commercial intent behind a meaningful share of the queries running through it.

  1. A group of three hundred (300) French publishers filed a formal complaint with France's competition authority against Google, arguing that AI Overviews and AI-generated search summaries have cut referral traffic to their websites by somewhere between thirty-three (33) and thirty-eight (38) percent. They are asking regulators to force compensation for the use of their content in training and generating those summaries.

If AI platforms are being the new front door to the intent for both discovery and advertising, then the businesses whose content built those platforms have a real claim to a share of the value being created. Both things are happening at once, and neither is waiting for the other to resolve first.

I would act on two things now rather than in six (6) months:

  1. Early inventory in a new ad channel is almost always the best inventory, before competition drives up cost-per-click and the algorithm matures. If your customers are the kind of people asking ChatGPT for recommendations, small tests now are worth more than a fully-formed strategy in six (6) months.

  2. Organic and referral search traffic is no longer a stable, durable channel. The legal and regulatory fights happening right now in France, and in similar complaints elsewhere, will shape what "search visibility" even means over the next few years, whether that is new compensation requirements for publishers, new disclosure rules for AI-generated content, or changes to how AI platforms are allowed to summarize and surface content at all.

This is not only a publisher problem. Any business, small or large, whose growth still leans on 2020-era SEO assumptions is exposed to the same shift, and small businesses have less room to absorb a sudden drop in organic traffic than a large media company does.

None of this calls for panic. It calls for treating channel mix as something to actively rebalance this planning cycle, not something set once and revisited next year. The businesses that test AI-native channels early, while diversifying away from total dependence on organic search, will likely be in stronger position than the ones waiting to see how the lawsuits shake out.
